This wonderful and quite rare antique cameo depicting Queen Charlotte was probably made shortly after her death in 1818. She gazes intently to the right and is adorned in the very fine clothes of high royalty, with an incredibly detailed and busy hairpiece, topped by a crown.
It's set into an ornate tubular gilt metal frame with applied leaf and wirework, for wear as a brooch or pendant. Tales abound about Queen Charlotte, consort and wife of mad King George III. She is however, still deeply beloved by history and her influence is still felt, not least in the Queen City Charlotte, NC where there are many statues of her and streets named after her. It dates from around 1840 and is in very good, fully wearable condition, with light wear here and there and a few age spots to the white part of the shell.
It weighs 30.5 grams and measures 2 ¾ x 2 ½ inches. The final photo shows it with a US penny (1 cent) coin for scale, which measures 19 mm / ¾ of an inch diameter.
