This is an Antique, hand carved Folk Art Saddle cup, made for a Cowboy to attach to his saddle horn and to use when traveling on horse back and drinking at the water hole. This piece depicts a mounted Cowboy on his horse, roping a bull. This is a large sized cup, is bigger than most, and although was made for use in the field and on the frontier, it appears it has little to no use, and has been kept as a Folk Art Object'd Art, displayed on a carved wooden display base. The carving is done in a relief method, i. The material in the background is removed, creating a raised 3 dimensional figures that create the Western motif.

The carving was done by a talented carver and shows fine attention to detail. These were hand made South of the Border, both in Mexico and in South America. This piece is 6 3/4 tall to the top of the tab used to secure the lanyard for the saddle horn.

The top is shaped mostly round, and is 3" x 3" and tapers to the base, which is about 2 1/4 diameter. This natural material is cross cut at the base and fitted with a tight wooden plug to make it waterproof for use as a drinking cup.

The base has a period number 26 written on the base, which could represent the Artist or an inventory number. The carving uses the natural coloration of the antiquebovinecowhorn, and creates a white mounted cowboy, horse and bull in white, with a background that mostly natural grey with off white coloration; with borders at the top and bottom and a tab for attachment of the leather lanyard. The inside is dirty, dusty and has dark aging, and appears to never have been cleaned. There are a few tiny bug bites to this natural material; one at the rider's midsection and adjacent lower arm, and a couple of tiny spots at the base. This piece has a carved wooden base that has genuine aging, is definitely old; and probably dates to the Charro Revival period from the 1920's to the 1940's.

This is in untouched, original condition, but may be enhanced by washing treating the natural material with wax or light mineral oil; and the 1 1/4" tall x 3 1/4" carved wooden base is faded and could be treated with wood stain if desired. This would fit into any Folk Art, carving, Cowboy, Western, Western American, accoutrement, or hand made Object d' Art collection, decorator or display item, and could still be used if desired.
