Pretty antique Chinese hongmu urn / pot stand with a fine quality carved frieze incorporating Chinese characters and flying bats. It is made of solid rosewood and dates from the Late 19th Century, or at latest, the early years of the 20th Century. The square top is inset into a moulded edge supported by 4 shaped legs which are joined by similarly shaped stretchers. It is the finely carved frieze which propels this table out of the ordinary reticulated corner brackets merge into a pair of flying bats supporting a central Chinese character. The carving, which is of fine quality, is repeated on all four sides.Apart from displaying pots this table could also be used as an occasional table or lamp table or plant stand. Dimensions: 13 3/4" square top x 27 1/4" height (33.5 cm square x 69 cm). Condition: In generally good antique condition with no losses to the carved friezes and with all joints firm. There are, however, some minor issues that should be mentioned: the inset top has a couple of closed shrinkage splits and has also pulled away slightly from one side; two corners have been damaged and repaired in the past (see photograph of the worst) and old movement has caused a couple of the legs not to be perfectly aligned (see photograph).
