Fine antique Chinese rosewood low table or plant stand with carved frieze & marble top, dating from the second half of the 19th Century. Lobate shaped top inset with pale red marble with a rosewood border and beaded edge. Heavily carved and pierced frieze depicting Prunus blossom. Carved and shaped legs, each in the form of a Foo Dog with a head at the top and a clawed foot at the base. Rich rosewood colour which is slightly lighter where the wear has been greater.
Chinese characters are painted onto the underside of the marble (see photograph of the underneath). Dimensions : 17" wide x 17 3/4" high.
There are two or three minor chips to the carving (the loss of two petals from a Prunus blossom being the easiest to spot - see photograph). The marble top has two radial cracks, but these are old and stable with absolutely no movement. These cracks, which are by no means easily observed except in close-up (see photograph) as they look similar to the natural veining in the rock, seem to originate from the joints in the wood as it has shrunk and moved a little with time. I can recommend seeking quotes from Shiply but please select a courier that will wrap the furniture with blankets and strap it to the side of the van. It is worth paying the extra for a company that specialises in transporting antique furniture. It is worth waiting a few hours to receive a number of quotes before accepting one.
