ANTIQUE AFRICAN Fine Folk Art Primitive WOOD & COPPER SCULPTURE Carving artwork

Up for sale here is a vintage, antique, maybe circa 1930s or most likely, much earlier African ceremonial figure. On a note card written on the back it reads 1Wood 2 Yaori Tribe sub tribe Guro or Curo 3 Ivory Coast Ceremonial Mask also used for Funerals. We have also been told that this piece looks a lot like a Gabon Funeral effigy Mask.

The work is hand carved wood that has what appears to be hammered copper overlay. The piece measures 22 inches high by 10 1/2 inches wide by about 3 inches thick. There is no signature on the piece. There is an old glue repair to the foot of the piece as well as a sizable crack or shrink crack to the wood at the bottom underneath the copper. There is quite a bit of corrosion to the metal where there are holes and it is green in quite a few places.

There is also a white crystal coating around the edges that looks like salt or sand, it may have been buried at one time a long , long time ago. There is quite a bit of oxidation to the wood, there is not much of a finish on the piece but the wood has darkened with age over the years.

A few of the old nails holding the metal down have come out or have rusted. The surface also feels like it has an older oily coating on it. Despite the flaws it looks like a very decorative piece. If you collect older African artwork, this would make a nice addition to your collection.
