A Fine Antique 19th Century Carved Shell Cameo Brooch, Mazeppa And The Wolves
A large and finely carved shell cameo depicting a rare scene from Byrons poem Mazeppa, this poem was published in 1819. In 1826 Émil Jean Horace Vernet painted the dramatic scene from this poem in his well known work Mezeppa and the wolves. The reverse of the cameo bears what appears to be a signature, however personally I cannot work it out. The mount is unmarked yellow gold, I would date the cameo to the early 19th century, perhaps shortly after the date the painting by Vernet was finished in 1826. However, please gauge this from the photographs provided. 4.9cm high, 6.2cm wide excluding pin, the pin 6.8cm wide. Please see photographs for condition, overall in nice condition, some light surface wear, a few stress mark to shell. An attractive piece in the hand, its size and subject matter makes it rather eye catching. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
